Wall of Flesh

The pre-Hardmode finale. Killing it flips your world into Hardmode permanently, so gear up first and understand what changes.

The Wall of Flesh is the last pre-Hardmode boss and the single most consequential kill in a Terraria world. It is a wall of gore that spans the full height of the Underworld and slowly chases you across it. The fight itself is a moving damage race, but the reason it matters is what happens after: the Wall of Flesh permanently flips your world into Hardmode. There is no undo. Everything you do to prepare is really preparation for the world you wake up in once it dies.

Before you summon

You summon the Wall of Flesh by throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into Underworld lava while the Guide NPC is alive. That kills the Guide, which is the trigger. Because of this, do not summon it by accident: dropping a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava is all it takes. The doll drops from the Voodoo Demons that wander the Underworld, so you will collect one naturally while mining Hellstone.

The single best thing you can do first is mine Hellstone and craft Molten armor, the strongest pre-Hardmode set. Pair it with the Night’s Edge (melee), Phoenix Blaster (ranged), or a comparable weapon for your class. Raise your HP toward 400 with Life Crystals, build the arena described below, and stock healing potions.

The arena

The Wall of Flesh moves horizontally, so you fight it while running away. Build a long, flat bridge across the Underworld, several hundred blocks wide, out of a non-flammable block so stray lava does not burn it. Place Campfires and Heart Lanterns at intervals for passive regeneration and Honey pools if you can. A mount or a pair of boots (like Spectre or Lightning Boots) keeps you ahead of the wall while you turn to attack.

Do not build your bridge out of wood or any flammable block, and clear the lava under your path. Falling into Underworld lava mid-fight, or watching your bridge burn out from under you, is the most common way this fight ends badly.

The fight

The Wall of Flesh has two eyes and a mouth (The Hungry). Its damage output rises as its health drops, and it speeds up, so the back half of the fight is the dangerous part. It also spits leeches that you should avoid or clear. Run in one direction the whole time, keep firing or swinging backward into it, and top up regen by passing over your Campfires and Heart Lanterns. If you get cornered against the edge of the map, you lose, so give yourself room and commit to one direction early.

Melee and ranged both work well here with the pre-Hardmode top tier. The key is sustained damage while never letting the wall catch you.

What Hardmode changes

When the Wall of Flesh dies it drops the Pwnhammer, and the world transforms. This is the flip:

ChangeWhat it means
Hallow appearsA pastel Hallow biome and a stripe of stronger evil biome (Corruption or Crimson) generate diagonally across the world
Biomes spreadHallow and the evil biome spread through connected blocks. Spread halves only after Plantera
Altars breakThe Pwnhammer breaks Demon/Crimson Altars, and each smash seeds a tier of Hardmode ore (Cobalt/Palladium, then Mythril/Orichalcum, then Adamantite/Titanium)
Enemies scale upNew, much tougher enemies appear on the surface and underground
New bosses unlockThe three mechanical bosses (The Twins, The Destroyer, Skeletron Prime) become summonable

Because the difficulty spike is real and permanent, do not kill the Wall of Flesh the moment you can. Kill it when you are ready to fight in the harder world it creates.

After the flip

Break a few Altars with the Pwnhammer to seed the first Hardmode ore, mine Cobalt or Palladium, and craft the first Hardmode armor tier. Then work toward Adamantite or Titanium gear before you take on the mechanical bosses. Contain biome spread early: dig trenches or use the Clentaminator to protect your Jungle and base, because Chlorophyte and Plantera both live in the Underground Jungle and you do not want it consumed.

Next: the three mechanical bosses gate Plantera and Chlorophyte. For the full order, see the boss order cheatsheet. For the endgame it all builds toward, see the Moon Lord deep guide.
