Combat Archetypes
The five Great Schools, the endgame meta builds players commit to, and the material gear tiers that back them. You are not locked into one school.

Endgame meta builds
Patch 1.4-era, guide-reported. Tier placements shift with balance patches.

Top Swordmaster weapons cited: Replica Pulse-sword (highest Tier 6 damage) or Jolt-sword.
Gear worth chasing
- Early (Hagga Basin South): Aren’s Vengeance (burst Kharpov 38 rifle), Hollower Stillsuit, Kaleff’s Drinker (blood-draining short blade), Emperor’s Wings Mk1 (suspensor belt).
- Endgame: Circuit Gauntlets (S-tier, roughly 10% power-cost reduction, fits most loadouts), Young Sparky Mk6, Adaptive Holtzman Shield (Deep Desert drops).
Do this in order
- Pick your mentor at creation. Mentat is a common first pick (Sentinel turret plus grappling hook), because the Trooper trainer appears early anyway and the Mentat trainer much later.
- Play through Hagga Basin South and grab the early uniques above.
- Unlock the other trainers as you travel (for example a Trooper at Griffin’s Reach) to open the remaining trees.
- Level for Skill Points (abilities) and Intel Points (research); climb the gear tiers with the material tech tree.
- At endgame, commit to a meta build and farm Tier 5/6 gear in the Deep Desert.
Watch out for
- Shielded enemies resist firearms (Holtzman shield). Headshot unshielded foes first, then melee the shielded ones.
- Nothing is permanently locked by your mentor, so do not treat the first pick as a commitment to one school.
- Homeworld and caste are mostly flavor with little to no mechanical effect. The mentor is the meaningful choice.
- Tier lists move with balance patches. Verify current placements before committing hard.
