Polyphemus
The Cyclops and first boss of the ascent, a brute who guards the way out of the City of Ephyra on the surface path.
Polyphemus is the first boss of the ascent, the surface path toward Mount Olympus. He is the Cyclops, and he guards the gate at the top of the City of Ephyra, the mortal city where the surface route begins. He is a brute, angry that Melinoë has stepped onto his land, and he is the first thing the ascent throws at you once you unlock the second half of the game.
The fight
Polyphemus is a heavy melee boss built around big, telegraphed attacks rather than the projectile spam or crowd pressure of the descent bosses. As a brute, his danger is in the size and force of his swings, so the fight is about reading his wind-ups and being somewhere else when they land. The research does not lay out a fixed phase script, so treat him as a telegraph-reading test: large, slow, punishing attacks that you punish back in the recovery windows.
Respect the wind-ups. Polyphemus hits hard enough that eating one big swing can undo a careful run, so the discipline here is to dodge first and only commit damage once the attack has whiffed.
How to approach it
Patience and positioning beat him. Use Sprint to get clear of his telegraphed swings, then return damage in the gaps while he recovers, rather than trading into the attack. Because he is a single large target, almost any damage engine works, so this is a fight where you can simply execute a build you already trust, for example Hestia Scorch ticking while you stay mobile. Spend your Magick and Omega on the openings his recoveries hand you, and do not channel a slow Omega cast into an incoming swing.
What makes it hard
The challenge is that he is your introduction to the surface, fought on a path you have less practice with than the descent. The patterns are new, the region is new, and a single big hit costs more here than the chip damage you learned to absorb in the Underworld. Players who are used to the descent’s faster, busier bosses can over-commit against his slower rhythm and get caught by the very telegraphs they should be waiting out.
What beating it means
Beating Polyphemus opens the rest of the ascent and the route to Bronze, the City of Ephyra reagent used to craft weapons. He is the surface’s on-ramp, the equivalent of Hecate on the descent: the gate that proves you can carry a build onto the new path. Past him the surface ladder steps up toward Eris, Prometheus, and finally Typhon.
